Plantar Fasciitis

If you are experiencing a stabbing or pulsing pain in the bottom of your foot, you may be suffering from plantar fasciitis. Plantar fasciitis is the inflammation of the tissue that connects the heel to the toes. About 2 million Americans seek treatment for plantar fasciitis every year.

Symptoms of Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar Fasciitis usually begins as a mild pain in the heel. As it progresses, it becomes a stabbing or pulsing pain in the bottom of the foot. Pain is usually increased after long periods of standing or after exercise. People who suffer from plantar fasciitis may have difficulty with activities that require them to be on their feet for long periods of time or put large amounts of pressure on their feet.

Risk Factors for Plantar Fasciitis

  • On your feet many hours per day
  • Flat feet
  • High arches
  • 40 to 60 years old
  • Wear worn-out shoes
  • Have tight Achilles tendon
  • Obesity
  • Female

Plantar Fasciitis Remedies

  • Rest – Take a break from activities that cause pain in your feet so your body can recover. Your rest period should last at least seven days.
  • Ice Your Feet – Icing your feet will reduce swelling.
  • Physical Therapy – A professional therapist can proscribe you exercises that will help heal your damaged tissue and strengthen muscles that can help alleviate discomfort.
  • Pain Relievers – One way to relieve your discomfort is to take pain relievers, such as ibuprofen. Pain relievers should be used with the direction of your doctor and in addition to therapy. Relying on pain relievers without addressing the structural problem will only mask your pain and cause greater complications down the road.
  • Foot Orthotics – Doctors who specialize in foot orthotics will take a detailed measurement of the pressure points on your feet. This measurement allows your doctor to provide you with customized shoe inserts to balance the pressure on your feet and diminish foot aches and strains. Foot orthotics may also help relieve pain in your legs and lower back caused by plantar fasciitis.
