Pinched Nerve

A pinched nerve is when pressure is placed on a nerve by bones and or tissue. Pinched nerves can occur in the back, as well as the neck, hands, elbows, wrists, and shoulders. A herniated, or slipped disc, can cause a nerve to become pinched

Symptoms of a Pinched Nerve

  • Back Pain – Pinched nerves can cause mild to severe pain in the lower, middle, and upper back as well as the neck. This pain can shoot down into the legs as well.
  • Numbness – Loss of feeling/sensation can occur in the area supplied by the nerve.
  • Tingling – Some people report a tingling sensation known as paresthesia in the area supplied by the nerve.
  • Muscle Weakness – Areas affected by the nerve may experience weakness.
  • Hands and Feet Falling Asleep – In some cases, pinched nerves can cause loss of feeling in your hands and feet. Many people describe this sensation as if their hands and feet have fallen asleep.
  • Stiff Neck – Loss of range of motion and muscle tension in the neck.
  • Leg Pain – Shooting pain down one or both legs.
  • Headache – Headaches may be the result of inflammation or irritation caused by the nerve.

Causes of a Pinched Nerve

  • Arthritis – Rheumatoid arthritis or wrist arthritis.
  • Herniated Disk – A disc that has slipped out can cause a nerve to become pinched.
  • Injury – A pinched nerve can be the result of falling, athletic participation, car accidents, or mishaps during everyday activities.
  • Obesity – Carrying extra weight puts added pressure on nerves.
  • Diabetes – Diabetic neuropathy is caused by type 1 and type 2 diabetes and can increase the risk of experiencing a pinched nerve.

Preventing Pinched Nerves

  • Exercise – Keep your body in motion through walking, swimming, aerobics, and other low-intensity exercises.
  • Maintain Healthy Weight – Carrying extra weight puts added strain on the spine and nerves.
  • Posture – Sitting, standing, sleeping, and lifting properly help prevent back pain. When lifting heavy objects, make sure to lift with your legs and not your back.
  • Regular Chiropractic Adjustments – Visit your chiropractor regularly to identify and prevent potential nerve issues before they become chronic problems.
  • Custom Orthotics – You can reduce your chances of getting a pinched nerve by wearing custom-fit orthotics that improve posture while increasing balance and stability.
